National Care Standards Review

The National Care Standards help everyone understand what they have a right to expect when they access health and social care services. They also help services understand and meet the quality and standards of care which they should provide.

In 2014, the Scottish Government launched a consultation seeking views on the approach and scope of the National Care Standards. The consultation set out a range of human rights-based proposals for developing new standards that improve the quality of care and protect vulnerable people. It also proposed a shared set of standards for health and care so that people working in health and care services have a "common understanding of what quality means and work to common core values".Following on from the consultation of the National Care Standards in 2014, the next phase of the National Care Standards Review is to develop a set of Standards linked to the overarching Principles which were approved by the Cabinet Secretary for Health and Sport in February 2016.
