parentforumscot For more detailed course information: SQA: Care National 4: www.sqa.org.uk/sqa/47392.html Education Scotland: www.educationscotland.gov.uk/nationalqualifications/index.asp Curriculum for Excellence Key Terms and Features Factfile: www.educationscotland.gov.uk/Images/CfEFactfileOverview_tcm4-665983.pdf NATIONALS IN A NUTSHELL The National Parent Forum of Scotland Summary of Care National 4 3 UNITS VALUES AND PRINCIPLES HUMAN DEVELOPMENT AND BEHAVIOUR SOCIAL INFLUENCES ADDED VALUE UNIT: INVESTIGATING SERVICES ASSIGNMENT WHAT WILL MY CHILD EXPERIENCE DURING THE COURSE? • Active and independent learning through self and peer evaluations, group feedback, reflecting on learning, making independent decisions • A blend of classroom approaches with a strong emphasis on care practice and real-life situations; experiential; whole class learning; group work and peer learning; visits; discussion • Collaborative learning: working in pairs, small groups or larger groups • Space for personalisation and choice: learners can choose which care settings and issues to investigate for their Assignment and the format in which findings are presented • Applying learning • Embedding literacy and health and wellbeing skills: listening; discussing; researching and presenting ideas and opinions; emotional, physical, social and mental wellbeing. ASSESSMENT • To gain National 4, learners must pass all Units • Units are assessed as pass or fail by the school/centre (following SQA external quality assurance to meet national standards) • Unit assessment (or ‘evidence of learning’) could be presented in a variety of ways such as written reports, presentations, e-portfolios, diaries, blogs. A portfolio of work may be prepared • The Added Value Unit (Assignment) will require learners to investigate care services that meet the needs of an individual, applying their learning. National 4 progresses onto National 5 CARE HEALTH & WELLBEING What skills will my child develop? • knowledge and understanding of social, physical, emotional, cognitive and cultural needs of people who use care services • knowledge and understanding of care services • understanding of the value base required for the care profession • knowledge and understanding of human development, behaviour and psychological concepts • the ability to use sociological concepts to understand social influences on individuals • to ability to investigate features of positive care practice • knowledge and understanding of attributes required for working in care settings (skills, qualities, values, principles) • the ability to plan and develop task management skills • investigate and present information + ADDED VALUE UNIT NATIONAL 4
