Skills Learners will be able to: • analyse and create media content, appropriate to purpose, audience and context • plan and research when creating media content, appropriate to purpose, audience and context • apply knowledge and understanding of the key aspects of media literacy • apply knowledge and understanding of the role of media within society • self-evaluate and develop critical thinking skills Opportunities for Learners Learners will be able to: • use different media effectively for learning and communication • be creative and express themselves in different ways • use creative and critical thinking to synthesise ideas and arguments • enjoy, and contribute to others’ enjoyment of, creative and expressive presentation • see the links between creativity and employability Assessment • The course will be assessed through two question papers (exams) and an assignment, which will be marked by SQA and graded A to D. • The marking is scaled so that paper 1 (Analysis of media content) makes up 33% of the total assessment mark, paper 2 (The role of media) makes up 17% and the assignment 50%. • The assignment involves a degree of personalisation and choice. Learners plan and develop media content in response to a negotiated brief. Question Paper 1 Question Paper 2 Analysis of media content Section 1: analysis of media content in context (40 marks) Section 2: analysis of media texts (10 marks) The role of media (20 marks) 2 hours 15 minutes 1 hour Specimen Paper www.sqa.org.uk/pastpapers/findpastpaper.htm Assignment Section 1: Planning (30 marks) Researching and planning media content, and considering the impact of actual or likely constraints. Section 2: Development (30 marks) Making the planned media content and evaluating the effectiveness of their development process and finished content.

Progression Higher courses can stand alone or follow on from National 5 qualifications and may lead to Advanced Highers, the Scottish Baccalaureate and a range of qualifications within Further and Higher Education.
