It combines practical learning activities that are underpinned by knowledge and understanding of photography. Skills Learners will be able to: • communicate personal thoughts, feelings and ideas using photography • develop technical and creative skills in using photographic media, techniques and processes • develop knowledge and understanding of a range of photography practice • develop skills in problem solving, critical thinking and reflective practices • analyse the impact of social and cultural influences on photographers and their work • become critically self-reflective, autonomous learners Opportunities for Learners Learners will be able to: • plan, develop, produce and present creative photographic work using a range of photographic media, techniques and processes • communicate personal thoughts, feelings and ideas in their photographic work • analyse the impact of outside influences on photographers and photography • use creative and technical problem solving skills and be able to critically reflect on and evaluate their own work and the work of others Assessment • The course will be assessed through a question paper (exam) and a project, which will be marked by SQA and graded A to D. • The question paper makes up 23% of the total assessment mark. Learners analyse examples of photography and show their knowledge and understanding of the properties of light and image formation, camera controls, and image- making techniques and their effects. • The project makes up 77% of the total assessment mark. Learners show their ability to integrate and apply their creative and technical skills and their knowledge and understanding of photographic practice. Question Paper Section 1 Section 2 Project Section 1 Section 2 Section 3 Multiple choice (10 questions) Analysis (2 questions) Analysis of two unseen photographic images from a range of genres and styles.

Planning, research and investigation Development and production Evaluation Learners select and present 12 images which communicate their topic. They also evaluate the effectiveness of their photographic work and practice (max 500 words). 1 hour 30 marks 10 marks 20 marks 100 marks 20 marks 70 marks 10 marks

Progression Higher courses can stand alone or follow on from National 5 qualifications and may lead to Advanced Highers, the Scottish Baccalaureate and a range of qualifications within Further and Higher Education.
