parentforumscot DEC 2017 For more detailed course information: SQA: Latin National 5: www.sqa.org.uk/sqa/47413.html Education Scotland: www.education.gov.scot/nationalqualifications Curriculum for Excellence Key Terms and Features Factfile: www.education.gov.scot/parentzone/Documents/CfEFactfileOverview.pdf NATIONALS IN A NUTSHELL The National Parent Forum of Scotland National 5 Summary Latin LANGUAGES National 5 progresses onto Higher Latin WHAT WILL MY CHILD EXPERIENCE DURING THE COURSE? • Active and independent learning through self and peer evaluations, reflecting on learning, making independent decisions • A blend of classroom approaches including the use of different media to create wikis, blogs; discussion; group work and peer learning; visits; online research • Collaborative learning: working in pairs, small groups or larger groups to share learning methods; with departments such as Geography to study Mount Vesuvius • Space for personalisation and choice: learners can choose their topic for the Assignment and the format in which to present it • Applying learning • Embedding literacy skills: researching and presenting information; analysis; understanding grammar.

ASSESSMENT • The course will be assessed through two question papers (exams) which will be marked by the SQA and graded A to D. Each question paper is worth 50% of the course assessment. • Question paper 1: Latin: literary appreciation. Learners analyse and evaluate detailed texts in Latin and translated into English, and show an understanding of literary techniques and aspects of Roman culture. • Question paper 2: Latin: translating. Learners translate a detailed and previously unseen Latin prose text into English. This is to show an understanding of vocabulary, accidence and syntax, as well as language, style and structure. What skills will my child develop? • Translation skills, including knowledge of more complex vocabulary, accidence and syntax • Knowledge and understanding of the impact of Roman culture on Scotland and elsewhere • The ability to apply greater knowledge of language to explore the interconnected nature of languages • The ability to understand, analyse and evaluate detailed texts in Latin and translate into English • The ability to plan, research and apply language skills and reflect on learning • Knowledge and understanding of literary techniques and aspects of Roman culture • Critical and creative thinking to synthesise ideas and arguments NATIONAL 5
