parentforumscot DEC2017 For more detailed course information: SQA: Care National 5: www.sqa.org.uk/sqa/47396.html Education Scotland: www.education.gov.scot/nationalqualifications Curriculum for Excellence Key Terms and Features Factfile: www.education.gov.scot/parentzone/Documents/CfEFactfileOverview.pdf NATIONALS IN A NUTSHELL The National Parent Forum of Scotland National 5 Summary WHAT WILL MY CHILD EXPERIENCE DURING THE COURSE? • Active and independent learning through self and peer evaluations, group feedback, reflecting on learning, making independent decisions • A blend of classroom approaches with a strong emphasis on care practice and real-life situations; experiential; whole class learning; group work and peer learning; visits; discussion • Collaborative learning: working in pairs, small groups or larger groups • Space for personalisation and choice: learners can choose the written format in which they present their research for the course assessment (e.g. a care plan, a training manual, an induction booklet) • Applying learning • Embedding literacy and health and wellbeing skills: listening; discussing; researching and presenting ideas and opinions; emotional, physical, social and mental wellbeing. ASSESSMENT • The course will be assessed through a question paper and a project, which will be marked by SQA and graded A to D. • The question paper is worth 40 marks and makes up 33% of the total assessment mark. Learners answer a series of questions that assess their knowledge and understanding of concepts, approaches, theories and applications in a care context. • The project is worth 80 marks and makes up 67% of the total assessment mark. In response to a given brief, learners research and investigate the care needs of an individual and the services that meet these needs. They must present their findings along with an action plan, evaluation and log book.

What skills will my child develop? • Knowledge and understanding of social, physical, emotional, cognitive and cultural needs of people who use care services • Knowledge and understanding of care services • Knowledge and understanding of the value base required for the care profession • Knowledge and understanding of the role of legislation • Knowledge and understanding of methods of assessment of care needs • Greater knowledge and understanding of human development, behaviour and psychological theories • The ability to use sociological concepts to understand social influences on individuals • The ability to investigate features of positive care practice • Knowledge and understanding of attributes required for working in care settings (skills, qualities, values, principles) • The ability to plan and develop task management skills • Research, investigate, evaluate and present information NATIONAL 5 Care HEALTH & WELLBEING National 5 progresses onto Higher Care
