parentforumscot For course information, specimen question papers and past paper guidance visit: Higher Economics: www.sqa.org.uk/sqa/47920.html Curriculum for Excellence Key Terms and Features Factfile Education Scotland: https://education.gov.scot/nationalqualifications Further Information for Parents and Learners Information on assessment, skills, progression, revision resources and summaries of National Qualifications www.parentforumscotland.org HIGHERS IN A NUTSHELL The National Parent Forum of Scotland Higher Summary Economics SOCIAL STUDIES SEP 2018 Content The course has three areas of study: • Economics of the market • UK economic activity • Global economic activity Skills Learners will be able to: • understand how markets work and how they affect our daily lives • understand economic problems and explain those problems and consider possible solutions to them • develop confidence in making decisions and in solving economic issues • think critically by devising economic solutions to a range of economic problems • analyse relatively complex economic information and communicate it in a clear and concise way Opportunities for Learners Learners will be able to: • analyse economic data and information in order to find solutions to economic problems and will communicate these solutions effectively • deepen their understanding of economic situations and resolutions to economic issues • learn to distinguish between facts and value judgments • be able to evaluate economic data from a wide range of economic sources in order to make informed decisions Assessment • The course will be assessed through a question paper (exam) and an assignment, which will be marked by SQA and graded A to D. • The question paper is worth 90 marks and makes up 75% of the total assessment mark. • The assignment (30 marks) makes up 25% of the total assessment mark. Learners select an appropriate and current economic topic/issue, research and analyse information, and produce a report using given headings. Question PaperSection 1: two questions based on stimulus material such as graphs, diagrams and/or text (30 marks) Section 2: three questions, each based on a different area of study (60 marks) 2 hours 30 minutes 90 marks Specimen Paperwww.sqa.org.uk/pastpapers/findpastpaper.htm Assignment Learners will research an economics related topic and write this up as a report. The assignment is carried out independently and is designed to be completed in about 8 hours. Learners choosing to carry out field research may need more time. 8 hours (approx.) Progression Higher courses can stand alone or follow on from National 5 qualifications and may lead to Advanced Highers, the Scottish Baccalaureate and a range of qualifications within Further and Higher Education.
