parentforumscot For course information, specimen question papers and past paper guidance visit: Higher ESOL: www.sqa.org.uk/sqa/47905.html Curriculum for Excellence Key Terms and Features Factfile Education Scotland: https://education.gov.scot/nationalqualifications Further Information for Parents and Learners Information on assessment, skills, progression, revision resources and summaries of National Qualifications www.parentforumscotland.org HIGHERS IN A NUTSHELL The National Parent Forum of Scotland Higher Summary English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) LANGUAGES SEP 2018 Content Learners develop their reading and listening skills in English relating to everyday life, work and study: • ESOL for everyday life • ESOL in work-related contexts • ESOL in study-related contexts Skills Learners will be able to: • read, write, listen, and speak in English • understand and use English language, as appropriate to purpose, audience and context • apply knowledge and understanding of the English language Opportunities for Learners Learners will be able to: • develop skills in reading and writing, listening, and speaking, which are essential for learning, life and work • develop their ability to communicate their thoughts and feelings and respond to those of other people • use different media effectively for learning and communication • develop an understanding of how language works and use language to communicate ideas and information in English Assessment • The course assessment has four components: three question papers (exams) and performance-spoken language. • Question paper 1: Listening (makes up 20% of the total assessment mark). Learners listen to one monologue and two discussions, each on a different topic, and respond to questions. • Question paper 2: Reading (25% of the total assessment mark). Learners read three texts in English, each on a different topic, and respond to questions. • Question paper 3: Writing (25% of the total assessment mark). Learners produce two written texts, one from the context of everyday life (220-250 words approx.) and the other from the contexts of either work or study (250-300 words approx.). • Performance: speaking and listening (30% of the total assessment mark). • The question papers and portfolio will be marked by SQA and graded A to D. The performance-spoken language is marked internally and verified by SQA. Question paper 1 Listening 45 minutes approx. Question paper 2 Reading 1 hour 10 minutes Question paper 3 Writing 1 hour 40 minutes Specimen Paper www.sqa.org.uk/pastpapers/findpastpaper.htm In the exams, learners respond to questions in English by using English. In Performance, learners have a discussion in English on a chosen topic with questions and interaction which will be recorded. Progression Higher courses can stand alone or follow on from National 5 qualifications and may lead to Advanced Highers, the Scottish Baccalaureate and a range of qualifications within Further and Higher Education.
