NATIONALS IN A NUTSHELL The National Parent Forum of Scotland National 5 Summary This course is suitable for Gàidhlig fluent speakers and learners who have experienced Gaelic medium education. ESOL English for Speakers of Other Languages LANGUAGES For more detailed course information: SQA: ESOL National 5: www.sqa.org.uk/sqa/47411.html Education Scotland: https://education.gov.scot/nationalqualifications Curriculum for Excellence Key Terms and Features Factfile: https://education.gov.scot/parentzone/Documents/CfEFactfileOverview.pdf WHAT WILL MY CHILD EXPERIENCE DURING THE COURSE? • Active and independent learning through self and peer evaluations, reflecting on learning, setting targets, evaluating progress, making independent decisions, using feedback • A blend of classroom approaches including sharing learning through group and class discussion; relating learning to everyday life, work and study; using a variety of texts in different media • Collaborative learning: communicating and working with others to complete tasks; embedding a multi-lingual culture • Space for personalisation and choice: learning should be tailored to the needs of learners e.g. work-related topics or study-related topics • Embedding literacy skills: researching and presenting information; evaluating; discussing; listening; talking; reading; writing.

National 5 progresses onto Higher ESOL.

ASSESSMENT • The course will be assessed through three question papers (exams) and a performance, which will be marked by SQA and graded A to D. • The question papers include Listening (25 marks), Reading (53 marks) and Writing (30 marks), so learners can demonstrate these skills in the contexts of everyday life, work and study. The question papers are marked by SQA. • The performance is worth 30 marks and requires learners to have a conversation in English, on a chosen topic, responding to relevant questions and comments. The performance is marked by the teacher and quality assured by SQA.
